Can you actually teach people to be funny?
Well, everyone except perhaps accountants.
Well, that's not even true. I had one accountant that even got laughs. But they had quit accounting so I don't know if that counts? (excuse the pun)
It's like teaching songwriting. You can't make people emotional but you can help them strengthen the connection and improve the expression of the emotion. I don't give people a sense of humour, the workshop helps them express the one they already have. Some people think you have to be a "life of the party" type to go well and that's not necessarily true. Stand-up comedy is not about being a clown per se. It's about communicating with humour. In the graduation performances the "wallflower" types have faired as well as the more "outgoing" students because of the increased element of surprise in their routines.
